“A taste of freedom can make you unemployable.” – @naval

In this crazy ever-changing ortho world, I find myself talking to people who are looking for a more rewarding role.

But when I drill down more, I often uncover the real need.  It’s not about more money, or a bigger title, or more responsibility.  It’s really about finding more Agency.

So what is Agency?

The definition of Agency is the capacity of individuals to act independently and to make their own free choices.  My definition of Agency in your career is a place where you can make things happen on your own terms. Agency is about empowerment, so you can choose how you work, choose when you work, choose who you work with, choose where you live, and choose how to be paid.

Yes. This is what we really want… more Agency.

And here’s the punch line.

You will have more Agency working in a smaller orthopedic culture than in a big orthopedic culture.

You will have more Agency working as a consultant than as an employee.

Period.

Do you have Agency in your current role today?
