The 2000s were the boom boom days of "spine". Every orthopedic company wanted "Spine" in their name for the hype, for the funding potential, for the recruiting pull and to look fresh and new. This hype cycle resulted in over 300 spine companies today. Obviously too many, but "Spine" was a useful moniker. An any new company to come of age in the 2000s called themselves. "______Spine". Existing companies like Alphatec Manufacturing changed to Alphatec Spine.
