Robots in ortho surgery – a contrarian view.

My perspective is completely different from the BoneZone piece this week, Robots Are Setting the New Standard of Surgical Care, that paints a rosy picture of robotic systems revolutionizing orthopedic surgery, from spine to shoulder procedures, touting enhanced precision, reduced fatigue, and a digital ecosystem poised to transform patient care. But let's cut through the marketing gloss: these robots are little more than expensive gadgets that drag out surgeries, demand more hands in the OR, and fail to deliver meaningful improvements in patient outcomes. Far from setting a "new standard," they're a costly distraction that burdens hospitals, surgeons, and ultimately patients without the evidence to justify the hype. The High Price of Precision Proponents like those quoted in the article gush about robotic platforms' millimeter-level accuracy and data-driven insights, but they conveniently gloss over the staggering costs. Acquiring a robotic system can run hospitals $500,000 to $1 million upfront, not counting annual maintenance fees and disposable instruments that add hundreds to thousands per case. Intraoperative expenses alone tack on $500 to $1,000 extra for each robotic-assis...
