In orthopedic startups, many founders get hypnotized by the implant, the regenerative platform, the AI planning software, the 510(k) path. Then they hire a team that “fits.” Polite. Low-drama. Same cadence. Same vocabulary. Same LinkedIn pattern. That’s how you build a nice company that dies on schedule. “The team you build is the company you build” is still true. What most founders miss is this: the team that fits is often the team that copies. The person who does not fit—the high-IQ outlier who makes the room tighter, the calendar messier, and your culture a little less comfortable—is frequently the only person who can keep you from becoming another me-too shop.
